Crumbling cliff threatens to send homes plunging into sea in Yorkshire

Photographs show a huge crack that has opened in a cliff on the Yorkshire coast just yards away from holiday homes at the Longbeach Leisure Park in Hornsea.

The coastline has been eroding at an annual average of seven and half feet – in one year, nearly thirty feet – and homes have already been removed to avoid collapse.

Homeowner Jenny Speight has owned four different properties at the site in the past 33 years and is now facing the relocation of her current home.

Ms Speight said “We have been on the site for 33 years and seen many changes but this is the worst the erosion has ever been.

"I thought we would at least see the year out here but with the weather and how quickly the cliff is eroding, we have been told we need to get out as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “The council is aware of reports regarding the most recent loss of land at this location and will arrange for its coastal engineers to visit the site and conduct an assessment.”
