Cruising for trouble with a sad sad wedding song

The latest gossip from the Cruise/Holmes nuptials - tabloid coverage of which has consistently included the phrase "weirdest wedding ever" - is that the groom serenaded the bride with the Righteous Brothers' You've Lost that Loving Feeling. DJ Mark Ronson played the song - which featured in the Cruise film Top Gun - at the reception, and the Tomster joined in, crooning the classic paean to a failed relationship: "You never close your eyes any more when I kiss your lips, and there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips".

Mrs Cruise's reaction? Rather than bursting into tears or telling Shorty to sling his hook, she was, according to a guest, "completely touched - laughing, loving him, enjoying him." Well, perhaps she was so consumed by the euphoria of the day that she saw it as a perversely adorable gesture.

But that doesn't excuse Cruise for thinking it was suitable to sing at his own wedding.

Is there a Scientology basis for it? The couple's wedding vows did contain a clause warning that Cruise would do inexplicable things: "Listen well, sweet Katie. Promises are to be respected. Young men are free and forgetful; therefore remind him that you have needs, sometimes even follies." Well, there's nothing so free as wailing a breakup song at your wedding, eh?.

Let's hope Katie comes up with a suitably vengeful folly.
