Cruise ship passengers revolt over missed stops, blocked toilets, intermittent Wi-Fi

Passengers protest aboard the Norwegian Spirit cruise ship.

Hundreds of angry cruise ship passengers are demanding refunds after operators skipped ports that were part of the Norwegian Spirit's two-week European itinerary.

People gathered with signs and shouted "we want a refund" in the atrium of the vessel earlier this week.

The voyage called 'Mystical Fjords' departed from Southampton, England with planned stops in the Netherlands, Norway and Iceland but all of these stops were cancelled.

However, the ship which can carry more than 2,000 passengers, did make scheduled stops at Belfast and Dublin.

The Norwegian Cruise Line blamed the "revised itinerary" on poor weather.

Passengers also complained about blocked toilets, their food going bad and losing reception to their paid Wi-Fi.

Passengers who spent about $7,300 to travel on the cruise ship described it as "the worst trip of [their] lives".

They vented their frustrations on social media.

One passenger, Cody McNutt, created the Twitter account @NCLHELL to live tweet his experience, including what he labelled as "riots" on board the ship between passengers and the staff.

At one point the crowds booed the captain.

"Passengers angered over continual lies and dishonesty from Norwegian Cruise line on Norwegian Spirit," Mr McNutt posted.

"Many passengers got off the ship when it stopped after 3 days stuck floating the ocean, fearing for their safety and health."

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line said "we understand that is it disheartening when we are unable to call to ports that our guests have been looking forward to visiting."

"However, we ask for their patience, cooperation and understanding. We do the very most we can to call to ports whenever it is safe to do so."

"Our goal is to showcase the beautiful destinations our ships visit and to provide guests with an onboard experience that is second to none."

The cruise line also offered passengers 25 per cent off future cruises, but Mr McNutt said that customers still wanted a full refund.

He tweeted: "NCL's apology only created more uproar aboard the Norwegian Spirit 2019 Iceland. This is insulting offering passengers 25% off another trip with them. We never want to travel with NCL [again]."
