Cruise ship Brits David and Sally Abel have tested positive for coronavirus

A couple on board a cruise ship in Japan have tested positive for coronavirus.

David and Sally Abel are among 169 people confirmed to have the virus over the last 48 hours, taking the total on board the ship to more than 500.

The married couple are being taken into further quarantine, with 74-year-old Mr Abel keeping the public informed of their journey on Facebook and YouTube.

In his most recent Facebook post, Mr Abel claims the couple are not being taken to a hospital but a hostel instead.

He wrote: "4pm 18th: Frankly i think this is a setup! We are NOT being taken to a hospital but a hostel.

"That’s where partners are sent waiting out there quarantine.

"No phone, no wi-fi and no medical facilities. I really am smelling a very big rat here! Waiting for the transfer now. xx"

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Dr Sarah Jarvis said: "This virus doesn't seem to be as deadly, we've had about 1 in 50 people with the virus who have died."

The Foreign and Commonwealth issued a statement. (ITV)

The doctor added that she didn't think medical masks were "terribly effective" and added that she believed coronavirus would make its way to the UK, though she believes we will be able to handle an outbreak.

The Foreign Office said today it was 'working to organise a flight back to the UK' for British passengers but it is unclear whether Mr and Mrs Abel will now be eligible.

454 passengers on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship have been quarantined.
