Cruise passenger dies in 'unexplained' circumstances on Edinburgh-bound Norwegian Getaway

A young man has died while onboard the Norwegian Getaway cruise ship, which was anchored in Newhaven in Edinburgh on 4 June. Emergency crews rushed to the harbour at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday after the report came in. It's believed that the 20-year-old died the day before on 3 June.

Two fellow cruise shop passengers were also taken off the giant vessel for medical treatment. It's not thought that their illness is related to what caused the death of the man, which is being treated as 'unexplained' (but not suspicious) by police.

Police confirmed that two other passengers were "taken into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service in connection with medical matters which are believed to be unrelated to the man's death."

The colourful ship was also scheduled to dock at Invergordon, Highland (Cruise The Highlands)

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said a special operations team and one ambulance were dispatched to Newhaven Harbour.

The huge Norwegian Getaway was too large to dock at Newhaven, so smaller 'tender' boats were used to bring the deceased man to shore. The ship has a capacity of 3,969 and a crew of 1,640.

Around 200 cruise ship passengers die at sea each year, according to The Telegraph, though the vast majority are from natural causes.
