Cruel yobs smash cars as families enjoy light switch on

Out-of-control vandals smashed up a row of cars as families celebrated a Christmas lights switch-on.

The cruel yobs targeted motors at the Tannahill Centre in Paisley as Ferguslie Park families came together to kick- off the festive season.

Police are investigating after two cars had their windscreens smashed with other vehicles also targeted nearby.

The annual lights switch-on and fair attracts hundreds of people from across the
town.

A 64-year-old man, who asked not to be named, last night told how he had enjoyed the event before returning to find his car had been vandalised.

He told the Express: “I got to the event around 4.30pm and parked in the car park.

“I came back out at 6pm.

“I was walking to my car with another guy and he said some cars had been vandalised in the car park, and my heart just sank.

“When I got there I found my car and another car had its windows smashed in.

The cars were vandalised outside the Tannahill Centre (JP Licence)

“It looks like they’ve used a bat or something similar.

“It’s hard to comprehend why someone would do that.

“I was in the Tannahill Centre enjoying the Christmas fair. It was a really enjoyable event with people all having a good time, then you come out and have to deal with that in the freezing cold temperatures.

“It’s hard to believe really.”

He added: “I’m very upset about it but I’m trying to be philosophical - no one was hurt.

“Now I have to deal with the aftermath. It triggers a whole set of things with insurance and repairs before
Christmas.

“Apparently some other cars had been targeted in the area as well.”

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed they were investigating the incident and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
