Cruel dog owner's mistreatment and neglect meant animal had to be put down

A man has been banned from keeping animals after his dog was left in extreme pain and had to be put down.

James McNicol, 39, was held after the SSPCA was alerted to a sick dog unable to stand on its own.

An officer went to the door, but McNicol claimed the animal's owner was out taking the dog for a walk.

But, prosecutor Victoria Kwell told Glasgow Sheriff Court: "The SSPCA officer returned to the car and spoke to a colleague.

"The colleague said the man at the door was McNicol and he owned the dog.

"The officer returned to the house to speak with him.

"He confirmed he was James McNicol and said there was a dog...but would not allow her to take the dog."

The SSPCA officer went into the living room and saw the dog - a crossbreed called Scamp - lying stricken on the floor.

The poor animal had visible ribs and hip bones as well as being unresponsive to touch and sound.

Scamp was rushed to the vet, but sadly had to be put down.

The dog was described as severely underweight and badly dehydrated. It had a mouth infection, lacerations and teeth issues.

The court heard help should have been sought for Scamp, who had been affected for a prolonged period of time.

McNicol, of Castlemilk, pled guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the animal.

Thomas Neil, defending, told the court: "He accepts the dog was unwell and he's not proud of himself."

Sheriff Diane McConnell told McNicol: "The condition of the dog was appalling. It was suffering greatly."

He was disqualified for keeping a dog for five years, put on 12 months supervision and subject to a restriction of liberty order.
