Crude oil exports resume from Wyndham

The oil tanker named Marlin Ametrine, docked at Wyndham and getting loaded with 65,000 barrels of crude oil.

Buru Energy has resumed exporting crude oil from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, loading a shipment out of Wyndham on the weekend bound for Papua New Guinea.

It is Buru's first shipment since restarting its oilfield near Broome earlier this year.

Speaking to ABC Rural while loading the Marlin Ametrine with 65,000 barrels, Buru's development engineer Shaun Nagra said it would take about 24 hours to load the tanker.

"It's going to Papua New Guinea, there's a refinery there, where it'll take the crude and refine it into various products world-wide," he said.

"Crude can be broken up into a number of different products, so it'll go through a refinery and you'll get diesels, kerosenes, you'll get tars for roads, it's a very valuable commodity."

Mr Nagra said the rising oil price was a boost to the company's Ungani project, and it was expecting to load another six tankers from Wyndham over the next 12 months.

"We shut [in January 2016] because of low oil prices, and now we've seen a rise in the price back to $50 a barrel," he said.

"We've also got bigger ships and bigger parcels of crude, so it's fantastic and it's a really good opportunity for Buru."

The Ungani oilfield is located on Yakka Munga Station, about 90 kilometres east of Broome.

Long-term, Buru Energy is aiming to export from the much closer port of Broome, but in the meantime is using Wyndham.

Buru owns 100 per cent of the Ungani project, but sold the cattle station to Shanghai Zenith last year for $8.75 million.
