Crucial Welsh rugby agreement finally reached as regions' £20m loan repayment to be extended amid imminent announcement

The repayment of the £20m loan debt facing the four Welsh regions is set to be extended over a 20-year period.

The loan was originally taken out with the NatWest bank by the WRU in order to keep the Welsh professional game afloat amid the huge losses incurred due to Covid.

That £20m was passed to the regions - Scarlets, Ospreys, Cardiff and Dragons - and they were faced with having to repay it over a five year period.

There has been talk for many months now about the terms of the loan being renegotiated to reduce the burden on the cash-strapped pro teams.

Now it appears an agreement has finally been reached, with an announcement set to be made imminently.

It’s understood the Welsh Assembly Government is to take over as the body issuing the loan, via the Commercial Bank of Wales, with the time-scale extended to 20 years.

They would give out £20m, enabling the WRU to pay off the loan to NatWest.

The initial repayment instalments to NatWest have been covered by the Union.

Under the renegotiated deal, the regions will pay back the £20m over a 20-year period at £1m per year.

The original loan was paid out as follows to the regions: £5.5m - Scarlets, £5m - Cardiff, £5m - Ospreys, £4.5m - Dragons.
