Crucial advice from Martin Lewis for the self-employed hit by virus lockdown

Martin Lewis has issued important advice to the self-employed amid the coronavirus crisis.

It comes as those who are self-employed are struggling financially and looking to the government for support.

Speaking from his home in London, the Money Saving Expert founder urged the self-employed to "hold on" as he expects an announcement in the coming days.

"What we've seen for the self-employed so far clearly isn't enough," Martin told viewers.

"I am expecting to hear a big announcement for the self-employed within the next day or so.

"I don't know that for sure, but we've seen some employers protecting employed people's salaries by up to 80% for those that can't work.

"Clearly, some sort of parity for the self-employed is needed, and I suspect that is going to happen."

Martin went on to reveal that his social media accounts have been flooded with concerned self-employed workers asking what support is out there for them.

The financial guru's message to those people is to be patient as help is hopefully on the way.

Martin implored: "So my message for the self-employed out there is, and I know people are panicking, hold on.

"I think something is coming. Give it a few more days. Just hold on."

In the meantime, Martin offered up some ways the self-employed might be able to secure financial relief.
"You may be entitled to employment support allowance if you're sick," Martin said.

"You may be entitled to some sort of universal credit. You can also defer your next self-assessment tax payment coming in.
