A 40-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the death of a three-month old baby girl in south London.

Police were called to reports of the child being unresponsive in Croydon shortly before midday on Saturday.

Officers and paramedics attended the scene but the infant was pronounced dead at 1.05pm.

Scotland Yard has confirmed the woman, from West Croydon, was charged on Sunday. She will appear at Bromley Magistrates Court.

A statement from the Met Police said: "A woman arrested following the death of a baby girl aged three months has been charged with her murder.

"At this early stage, police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation. The baby and the woman arrested were known to each other."

The child's family has been informed and enquiries into the incident are ongoing, Scotland Yard added.

Anyone with information concerning this death is asked to call police via 0208 785 8099 or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.
