A 51-year-old man has been left with "potentially life-changing" facial injuries after a corrosive substance attack in south London.

Police have appealed for witnesses following the attack in Surrey Street, Croydon in December.

Two men, aged 40 and 53, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after the incident.

Both men have been released on bail until mid-February pending further enquiries.

Just after midnight on December 1, officers were flagged down in Surrey Street where they found the man who had been attacked.

They immediately doused his face in water before he was taken to hospital.

His injuries were not life threatening but his condition remains potentially life-changing, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Detective Constable Chris Dimmer of Croydon CID said: “This was a violent and vicious attack that caused serious injury and sight damage to the victim.

“I urge anyone who witnessed this incident or has information on concerning the identity of the suspects to contact police immediately.”
