Crown Point Road reopens after Leeds City Council truck drives away with world war bomb

Crown Point Road has been reopened after a Leeds City Council truck drove away with

The dramatic discovery was made by magnet fisherman Dave Pearce, of Roundhay, this morning.

He called West Yorkshire Police,  who told him to 'put it down and don't touch it' before officers closed off Crown Point Road in both directions and put a cordon in place.

A bomb disposal team was called to the scene, near Clarence Dock, and the motar device was driven away from the scene just before 4pm this afternoon.

There had been warnings the road could be closed well into this evening's rush hour but traffic is now moving freely again.

The closure caused significant delays in the city centre, with delays of up to 35 minutes on city centre bus services.

The road is a major route in and out of Leeds city centre and close to connections to the M1 and M621 motorways, as well as the city centre loop road.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "At 11:14am today, police received a report of a suspected first or second world war mortar device at Crown Point Road, Leeds.

"A cordon has been put in place while the package is due to be examined. EOD are on the way and Crown Point Road is currently closed."
