Crowds turn out to watch Calverton Christmas lights switch-on

A cold misty afternoon did little to put a damper on the switch-on of the Christmas lights in Calverton.

The occasion was marked by not only a brass band performance, but also a visit from Santa on his sleigh.

Despite the chilly weather there was a good turnout for the get-together, with a tangible community atmosphere.

Tammy Sims, a mortgage advisor from Calverton, was delighted by the turnout.

The 37-year-old said: “I’m overwhelmed by the number of people that have turned out, it’s really nice to see the community to come together.”

Samantha Marlow recently moved to Calverton with her husband Bruce, and both were keen to see what the community had to offer.

The 34-year-old NHS worker said: “We’ve come down because we’ve just moved to Calverton, the reason we moved here is because of the community.

“It’s a nice, friendly atmosphere.”

However, it turns out that it was not just Calverton residents who were looking forward to the occasion.

Peter Knight, a retired engineer from Mapperley, said: “It should be the great, I can’t wait to hear the ladies sing.”
