Crowds of Scots flock to beaches as cops step up patrols on trains and in hot spot areas

Police upped their patrols today as crowds of Scots headed for beaches.

Temperatures reached scorching highs of 21 degrees in Glasgow today prompting beach-goers to head to the coast in their droves.

One Scot shared a picture of crowds spilling from trains in Troon as Glaswegians spent the day basking in the sun in Ayrshire.

He said: "My mate just sent me this he was getting off the train at Troon station earlier this was the exodus off the train behind him."

Cops and British Transport Police were on patrol this afternoon, while Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team was deployed on "proactive incident prevention" at local beaches.

The coastguard team said: "The beaches across Ayrshire are exceptionally busy with people enjoying the good weather and we are urging everyone to stay safe when visiting the coast."

CalMac ferries also warned of delays and even temporarily suspended day trips between Largs and Cumbrae due to "volume of traffic and reduced capacity".

The force has now warned there will be more police in Glasgow city centre.

Greater Glasgow Police said: "We're working with our partners at ScotRail and British Transport Police to help day trippers get home safely from Ayrshire's beaches so don't be alarmed if you see more officers in Glasgow city centre."

Scotland was set to be warmer than Lisbon on Tuesday, with the Met Office anticipating temperatures to peak at around 24C in some parts of south west Scotland.

Forecasters expect the temperatures in Lisbon to fall short of the peak in Scotland, with the Portuguese capital set to see 23C heat around the same time.

Central and some northern areas of the country will also see the thermometer soar above 20C over the course of Tuesday afternoon.
