Crowds gather in protests across Greater Manchester to support Palestine

Protesters packed the streets of Greater Manchester on Saturday (May 22) to give their support to Palestine.

Hundreds gathered initially in the city centre at lunchtime - with placards, flags and banners expressing solidarity to Palestinians after 11 days of conflict with Israel prior to a ceasefire which began on Friday.

Organisers from Manchester Palestine Solidarity Campaign said they wanted to 'raise the Palestinian voice', with speakers from Palestine lining up to address the crowd at Piccadilly Gardens.

They included a young woman that lived in Palestine for three years, who proudly told the crowd she is a Mancunian and now lives without fear.

She said: "I was scared to go to Palestine, I was scared from the bombings in the Gaza strip.

"But I'm not scared anymore - and I need you all to feel it."

Speakers were warmly welcomed and applauded by the crowd, which frequently broke out into chants of 'free Palestine' throughout the afternoon.

A minute's silence was held for the more than 200 Palestinians killed in this month's conflict, while protesters were also asked to pay their respects to the 22 Manchester Arena bombing victims, with the demonstration coming on the fourth anniversary of the atrocity.

After two hours at Piccadilly Gardens, including the names of children killed in the conflict being read out, protesters began marching through the city centre.

Crowds chanted as they passed through Market Street, Deansgate and Peter Street, with traffic blocked off by police and buses stopped from passing at John Dalton Street.

The protest stopped at St Peter's Square before returning to Piccadilly Gardens, before around 200 demonstrators continued the march down Portland Street and Oxford Road, towards the university sites.

Most protesters reconvened in Piccadilly Gardens, where speeches continued until around 4.30pm.

Groups involved included Manchester Palestine Action; Palestinian Forum; Muslim Association of Britain; Palestinian Community Group; Manchester Jewish Action for Palestine; Greater Manchester Stop the War Coalition; Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism!; and Greater Manchester CND.

Meanwhile, a number of other demonstrations also took place this afternoon across Greater Manchester in support of Palestine.
