Crowds gather as seagull gets stuck on city centre shop wall

Concerned shoppers lined the streets after a seagull got itself stuck on a city centre shop wall.

Video footage shows the clearly distressed bird desperately trying to free itself from the cladding of the Kurt Geiger clothes store in Church Street .

Crowds of shoppers were so taken by the bird's plight that they put off their retail chores to gather and will it to safety.

A fire crew arrived at the scene and a cherry picker was sent to the busy street.

Assistant manager of Kurt Geiger, Ashleigh Herrity, called the RSPCA earlier this morning to inform them that the bird had been trapped in the building.

She said: “A passerby alerted us that there was a bird trapped on the wall of the building.

“It flew into the wire and the wire was wrapped round one of its wings”.

According to staff at the store, the fire brigade arrived at around 12.40 and were there for an hour.

Store manager, Theresa Maguire said: “From 10 this morning we had people coming in and out telling us about it - but we’d already called the RSPCA by that time

“All day there’s just been crowds looking up outside - coming in and out, coming in and out and videoing what was happening.

20 year old Rebecca Crompton, who also works at the store said: “As soon as the fire brigade come - there were crowds everywhere - there were around 200 people.”
