Anger as day-trippers show 'complete disregard' for social distancing in Weston-super-Mare

Crowds of people visited Weston-super-Mare on the hottest day of the year so far, prompting the town's Mayor to hit out at people for the lack of social distancing.

Mayor Mark Canniford hit out at a "complete disregard" for the town's residents, with people failing to queue in a socially distanced manner as government guidelines were flouted.

Pictures show a busy Marine Lake on Wednesday, May 20 as temperatures between 26C and 28C meant people flocked to the beach.

Speaking on BBC breakfast, the Mayor said he was concerned about the risk to people who live in Weston-super-Mare now people are allowed to drive to beauty spots and beaches for picnics.

He said: "There was a complete disregard for the residents, complete disregard for the rest of the seafront, not taking any notice of proper queuing when they were trying to get something to drink or eat.

"Weston seafront, the facilities just aren't there. It can't cope with the number of people but people have still come."

The Mayor admitted they will have to review measures taken so far and see if they can do more to discourage crowding.

With a sunny weekend forecast for the bank holiday weekend, more people are likely to drive to the coast to enjoy the nice weather.

The fear is if people do not stick to social distancing guidelines this could lead to a peak in coronavirus cases in towns like Weston-super-Mare.
