Crowds flee late-night shooting in Hollywood; gunman at large

Jan. 07--Police are investigating a shooting in Hollywood early Wednesday in which authorities said a man stood on a sidewalk and began randomly firing into the air.

The incident occurred about 2 a.m. on Hollywood Boulevard off Cosmo Street, said Sgt. Chad Lewis of the LAPD's Hollywood division.

"We had one witness who said a gentleman was shooting in the air, then fled in a vehicle," Lewis said.

That witness, the only person who came forward to police about the incident, couldn't provide any details about what the gunman looked like, Lewis said. It wasn't clear if the shooter was aiming at anyone specific, he said.

Broken glass and shell casings were found at the scene, police said.

At present, the suspect is wanted only for discharging a firearm in city limits, Lewis said.

"It was hectic around here," a witness told KTLA. "People were trying to get out of the way, so we just ran as fast as we could."

The incident was the third shooting in the area in the last two weeks. On Sunday, a man was shot to death by two robbers who were breaking into neighborhood cars, and on Dec. 26, police shot a woman they said pointed a gun at officers.

None of the incidents are related, police said.
