Many people flocked to downtown Tokyo areas, tourist spots and elsewhere on Saturday -- the first weekend following the end of the state of emergency due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

There was a general increase in economic activities as events that had been postponed were held on the day.

On that day, it was sunny all over the country from the morning onward, and the Tokyo Skytree in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, held an event -- which had been postponed four months -- to commemorate the ninth anniversary of its opening.

The observation deck of the Skytree was crowded from morning on Saturday, with visitors gazing at the Tokyo cityscape spreading out under the blue sky.

"I decided to meet with a friend because the emergency declaration ended, and I've already been vaccinated. I hope this kind of daily life will gradually return to normal," said a woman from Saitama City who enjoyed the scenery with a friend from her school days.

At Tokyo Disneyland in Chiba Prefecture, which has doubled its daily maximum number of visitors from 5,000 to 10,000, families lined up in the morning waiting to enter the park.
