Crowds attend 'unplanned' anti-lockdown march in Glasgow city centre

Police in Glasgow have been called in to manage an "unplanned" anti-lockdown demonstration that has packed out the city centre.

The protest has been organised by Scotland Against Lockdown, a group that runs campaigns against coronavirus protection measures.

The group says it is opposed to mandatory facemasks, the Scottish and UK Governments' Coronavirus Act 2020, social distancing and mandatory vaccines, according to its social media pages.

The group announced the assembly via social media yesterday, urging protesters to gather at Nelson's Monument in Glasgow Green.

They do not appear to have informed police of their intentions. Officers have described the procession through the city centre as "unplanned".

Crowds of activists marched in Argyle Street during what the campaign group called a "Freedom Rally".

Some of them were pictured carrying placards saying "Do you trust your 'govern'ment with your life?" and "vaccine passports means your body will be owned by the state forever".

Others held placards referencing a need to "drain the swamp" - a phrase recently re-popularised by ex-US President Donald Trump.

The procession halted buses and other traffic along central thoroughfares as protesters were guided via the roads through the city.

One witness said about 1,000 people were taking part. This figure could not be independently verified.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers are currently facilitating an unplanned procession in Glasgow City centre to ensure public safety and minimise disruption to the community."
