A hero couple have been left devastated after their house was gutted by fire while they were out shopping for their elderly parents.
Robert and Julie Cumming, who are both key workers in the coronavirus fight, are now having to live in a hotel after flames tore through their Whitburn home.
Their house was destroyed in the blaze which started while they were out picking up supplies for their parents at the weekend.
The couple’s friends and family have now rallied round to support them and a fundraising page has been set up.
Mike and Christine Siddall set up the Gofundme page, which has raised over £2000 in just a few days.
They are also hoping tradespeople will step in to help.
Christine said: “Julie and Robert are both pillars of the community and both are key workers, Robert working in refuse collection
and Julie working in the care industry. Their home is totally destroyed and will need to be gutted and everything replaced.
“Julie has worked in care homes for 30 years, currently looking after elderly patients with dementia.
“Robert served with the Royal Scots in Northern Ireland and the Gulf War and now works with Scotwaste.
“Both their workplaces have given them the next two weeks off to try and sort things out. It would be fantastic if we could all help get them back into their house by the time they return to work.”
Christine continued: “We are appealing to everyone to donate as much as they can to help two very kind and compassionate people.
“Any tradesman, industrial cleaners, joiners, painters, gas-fitters, electricians, kitchen-fitters or plasterers who would be willing to give their time would be really appreciated.”
