Ayr Hospital was placed on medical alert tonight as ambulances and patients were diverted down the A77.
It followed the lockdown of Crosshouse Hospital, where a major incident is underway.
Reports of a stabbing at the hospital – along with another serious incident in the town centre – have sparked a huge emergency response.
A heavy police presence is currently on the scene and a police helicopter has been seen overhead.
As a result, NHS Ayrshire & Arran took the step of diverting all ambulances to Ayr.
The hospital was on stand-by to act as Ayrshire's main care hub tonight while police investigate the ongoing situation at Crosshouse.
A short time ago, the health board confirmed they had been able to lift the lockdown, with police stating the incident was not terrorist-related.
A statement from the health board read: "Police Scotland have confirmed the risk to patients, staff and visitors to the hospital is minimal, and so this lockdown has been lifted."
Medical director Dr Crawford McGuffie added: "We are assisting Police Scotland with their investigations, and to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors.
“As this is a Police Scotland incident, we are unable to comment any further at this time.”
