Crossbow shooting: Bolt passes through pensioner's upper body and right arm

A pensioner who was shot with a crossbow outside his home suffered "horrendous" injuries when a bolt passed through his upper body and right arm.

Gerald Corrigan, 74, remains in a critical condition in hospital after he was shot outside his home in Holyhead, North Wales, in the early hours last Friday.

Mr Corrigan was trying to fix a satellite dish outside his home when he was hit, and managed to stagger inside just after 12.30am and call for an ambulance.

North Wales Police revealed the extent of his "life-changing" injuries as they appealed for the person who fired the crossbow to come forward, saying a person would be "significantly traumatised" if they had shot someone accidentally.

The force had previously urged anyone involved in lamping, hunting or game or pest control to contact investigators.

In the latest update, DCI Brian Kearney, Senior Investigating Officer, said: “Gerald has suffered horrendous injuries after the bolt passed through his upper body and right arm.

"We are grateful to the team at Royal Stoke University Hospital for the brilliant medical care he is receiving.”

The officer confirmed Mr Corrigan is in a critical condition.

"The family are being supported by specially trained officers and remain deeply traumatised."

Police had previously said the pensioner's injuries were "life-changing" and the motive was "totally unknown".

Mr Corrigan's home is in an "extremely remote location" in Holyhead, the largest town on Anglesey, the force said.

North Wales Police have brought in national experts to assist in the investigation.

DCI Kearney said: “I am appealing to the person who discharged this weapon to come forward.

"This is an impartial search for the truth and I have no doubt that any person who discharged such a weapon accidentally at a human being would be significantly traumatised.

"You will be treated professionally by myself and my team of officers.”

He added: “Our community and the victim’s family want you to come forward of your own free will and do the decent thing to help them understand what happened.

“I would also appeal to any member of the public who knows of anyone who owns a crossbow and was on the Isle of Anglesey on the 18 and 19th of April to come forward. This includes anyone who was visiting Anglesey at this time.”

“Any information provided will be treated confidentially and will assist us greatly in potentially eliminating individuals from this enquiry at an early stage.”

“Finally I would appeal to businesses on Anglesey and in North Gwynedd which sell crossbows, bolts and accessories to get in touch with North Wales Police.”

In attempt to reassure local residents, DCI Kearney said it was a "highly unusual incident" for such a safe area and "we are determined to find whoever was responsible for this as a matter of urgency".

Appeal posters will be distributed around the Holyhead area.
