'Cross' Ruth Langsford on government's 'sexist' beauty salon restrictions

Ruth Langsford admitted to being a bit "cross" with the government during todays This Morning.

This is because they were discussing the decision to allow beauty salons to reopen but permit them from doing any facial treatments such as eyebrow waxing.

But this has caused annoyance in the beauty industry as some business owners still cannot reopen due to the restriction.

This has also been blasted as sexist as while women can't pop to the salon to get their eyebrows fixed or make-up applied, men can have their beards trimmed.

Discussing this on Tuesday's show, Eamonn Holmes told viewers that his wife was particularly annoyed about this which she admitted as while she couldn't have her eyebrows done, but if Eamonn wanted to he could get a shave.

Salon owner Laura, from Essex, also appeared on the ITV show to discuss the matter which she said is "absolutely disgraceful".

"We can't do any face-to-face. We don't do face-to-face, we work from behind," she expalined.

"In the lash, brow and the facial industry, we are absolutely fuming. You can get a beard trim done, but you can't work from behind, you can't work face-to-face. Why is it that men can get beard trims?

"It's absolutely disgraceful, it's completely sexist. They can get a beard trim, the football is back, the pubs are back open... why are we not back at work?"

Caroline Nokes MP, and chair of the women's and equalities committee, also waded in on the matter and she agreed that it wasn't "fair" that women can't have treatments on their face.

Eamonn then asked here if she thought it was a sexist decision in reference to the coronavirus guidelines all being made by male MP's.

To which Caroline replied: "Yes. It's a business which turns over £30 billion, I think there is a misunderstanding.

"I think it's really important we big this up for the brilliant businesses - for my part, it's getting the message across to hundreds and hundreds of MPs," she added.

"It's essential to the emotional and mental wellbeing - and these treatments can give people more confidence," Caroline referred to laser, tattooing, reconstructive treatments for those that have suffered with cancers, alopecia, endometriosis etc."

Beauty salons were permitted to reopen on Monday (July 13) with plenty of rules in place for staff and customers.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
