Crooks use car to smash their way into Northumberland store in overnight ram raid

Police are appealing for witnesses after crooks ram raided a Northumberland store during the night.

A Suzuki Vitara is believed to have been used to ram the Co-op store front in Bedlington in an attempt to take the cash machine inside.

Those involved were unsuccessful and fled the scene empty handed.

Police are now investigating the attempted burglary which occurred shortly after 12.10am on Station Road and have called for the public's help in tracing those responsible.

Inspector Phil Patterson, of Northumbria Police , said: "We have launched an investigation however, we do believe this to be an isolated incident and are currently carrying out enquiries.

“Extra officers will be on patrol in the area to reassure residents and I urge anyone with any information to come forward and speak to us.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers via 101 and quote reference number 21 29/07/19.

It comes a week after a similar incident in Hesleden, County Durham , when a group of three people used a Suzuki Grand Vitara to ram the front of the Post Office.

The suspects gained entry to the Front Street premises at around 12.20am, on July 22, before making off from the scene in the direction of Blackhall.
