Crooked cop who swiped £80 from wallet handed into police jailed and hit with £3k fine

A crooked cop who swiped £80 from a wallet after it was handed into police now faces jail and a £3,000 fine.

PC Mohammad Ghalayini helped himself to the cash on 12 November 2020, when a member of the public handed the wallet over.

The 33-year-old Met officer, based at Tottenham Police Station, pocketed some of the cash for himself.

But the theft was reported by an eagle-eyed colleague who discovered the £80 was missing and turned Ghalayini in.

Now the law enforcement officer faces 22 months in jail for his lawlessness and has been hit with a £3,000 fine.

PC Ghalayini, attached to North Area Command Unit, was arrested on 24 March 2021 following an investigation by the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards.

He denied the charges but was convicted by a jury of theft and perverting the course of justice following a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

The judge, Mr Recorder Nigel Sangster, KC, jailed him for 22 months in prison and ordered him to pay £3,000 in costs.

Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines said: "It is bitterly disappointing that an officer has acted in such a deceitful way.

"It is really important that people have more trust in us, but actions like this understandably undermine confidence in the police. Across the Met we are working to clear out those who corrupt us and let down the public."

PC Ghalayini has been suspended from duty and faces misconduct proceedings.
