Crook stole woman's purse and went on shopping spree with contactless card

A crook stole a woman’s purse and used a debit card to steal goods from two supermarkets.

Opportunistic thief John Haley nicked the purse and its contents from the woman in Costa Coffee in Motherwell’s Brandon Parade South on May 30.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court this week, Haley appeared in the dock for sentencing having admitted the theft of the purse and using the contactless card on two occasions on the same date at a previous hearing.

The 38-year-old thief went into the Aldi store in Mason Street with the woman’s purse and used the card to obtain meat goods to the value of almost £30.

Haley then did the same thing at the nearby Asda supermarket in Watson Street and brought £24.80 of meat using the woman’s card.

Sheriff Alastair MacFadyen further deferred sentence on Haley, of Woodside Walk, Hamilton, and called for criminal justice and social work reports to be prepared ahead of the accused next court appearance.
