Croke Park to be turned into COVID-19 testing centre

Croke Park is to be turned into a testing centre in the battle against coronavirus.

The GAA’s iconic stadium has been offered to the HSE as a venue to carry out tests for suspected cases.

So often the scene of historic events and games, it is likely to be provided as a drive-thru facility.

Residents in the vicinity of the ground were alerted to the decision today.

They were circulated with a message explaining that the layout of the stadium is suitable for a testing centre.

It’s understood it will not be a walk-up service.

Patients would first receive an appointment from healthcare staff to attend for a test.

They will be asked to travel to Croke Park and then leave the area immediately after testing.

A statement issued to residents reads: ” Following a high-level request from the HSE today and in the national interest, Croke Park is to become a drive-thru facility for testing for Covid-19 for designated appointments.

“This will not be a walk-up service. The stadium layout has been identified as being suitable for facilitating this important service at this time. As soon as we have further information, we will share with you.”

It is believed that people will be able to drive their car into the stadium’s tunnel, where they will then be tested without having to exit their vehicle.
