Croke Park the only GAA venue that could form part of 2030 World Cup bid

Cork Park is the only GAA venue that could form part of the Ireland and UK bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Stadia for the tournament must have a minimum seating capacity of 40,000, which makes GAA headquarters and the Aviva Stadium as the only two grounds on the island that fit the bill.

Cork’s Páirc Uí Chaoimh, which opened in 2017, holds 45,000 though that is with terracing at either end of the ground. When the terracing is replaced with seating, the capacity drops below the 40,000 threshold.

Semple Stadium and the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick boast similar capacities of which terracing also accounts for a significant portion.

The Hill 16 terracing in Croke Park was seated for the Republic of Ireland’s competitive internationals at the venue between 2007 and ‘09 while Lansdowne Road was being redeveloped, dropping the capacity from 82,300 to around 74,000.

Although the sod has yet to be turned on the Casement Park redevelopment in Belfast, its projected capacity is just 35,000, while Windsor Park (18,500) would fall well short of the mark.

Stadia hosting a quarter-final would require a minimum of 60,000 seats.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson put his weight behind the bid earlier this week, with the Irish Government also voicing support.
