Crocodile breaks out of zoo van and runs down road in front of terrified people

A crocodile caused chaos for road users after attempting a daring escape from a zoo van.

Zoo workers tried to catch the deadly reptile with a pole as it disrupted traffic and terrified onlookers going about their day.

The zoo posted the incident on social media, saying: "Earlier today, we were relocating crocodilians to another area of the zoo.

"They were secured and placed into our zoo van. This animal broke the back window of the van and made a dash down the road."

Video footage shows reptile keeper Kasryn and general curator Gen walking up to the crocodile, wrangling it in their catch pole noose, and then jumping on its back to control its movement.

The crocodile swung its tail aggressively and resisted the staff members' attempts to subdue it.

Luckily, they managed to in the end, holding it still until two of their co-workers assisted them in re-capturing the crocodile.

"This is why we have extensive training and do drills, to prepare for moments like this," the zoo said.

They added that the crew "acted quickly" to recapture the crocodile and deliver it to its new home.

"At no time was there any real danger as the animal's mouth was secured," they said, after the footage showed many passerbys looking horrified.

The zoo, St Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in the sunshine state of Florida, US, houses every living species of crocodile, according to its website.

Many social media users praised their joint efforts in getting the crocodile back to its van, with one person writing: "Great job in a situation that was really scary! Your handlers are the best."
