Crocketford residents have their say on new A75 crossing

The A75 is never far from the political spotlight.

But Crocketford residents feel aggrieved that safety campaigns always seem to pass them by.

Nearby Springholm has benefited – in the eyes of some – from speed sensitive traffic lights.

Pedestrians are also able to cross the busy route safely at a pelican crossing. Crocketford recently had two crossings installed – but neither is light-controlled.

Crocketford residents hit out at plans for "incredibly dangerous" crossings on A75

An electronic 30mph warning sign at the Corsock road junction does alert drivers. But pedestrians still have to run the gauntlet of thundering traffic to cross over.

Now Scotland Transerv has called a public meeting to discuss road safety measures. What message will local people want to give at the village hall event on May 22?

Ann Botel. (Jim McEwan)

Ann Botel said: “We are not happy with these uncontrolled crossings. We live here and we know how difficult it is with the road. We just want to have the ability to cross it safely.

“Kids have to cross the road to catch the school bus. And we have a lot of elderly people who have to stand and wait at the side of the road until they can get across.”

George Rutherford. (Jim McEwan)

George Rutherford said: “At one of the crossings you have to be in the middle of the road to be able to see the traffic coming.

“We don’t have a proper zebra crossing with lights like they have in Springholm.

Castle Douglas and Crocketford councillor David James resigns from Conservative group

“They have traffic lights for cows down the road. But we don’t have one for people.”

Jean Rutherford. (Jim McEwan)

Jean Rutherford said: “We were in Glasgow on Monday and we were saying it’s easier to cross the road in the city than it is in Crocketford. I think it’s more hazardous now because people assume that it’s safe to cross and it’s not. There’s nothing to tell the traffic there’s a pedestrian crossing.”

Meg Fulton. (Jim McEwan)

Meg Fulton said: “You sometimes have to stand and wait ages next to big timber lorries and tractors going past.

“The traffic coming through here is the same traffic that comes through Springholm yet they they have a pedestrian crossing with lights.”
