Croatia set to be added to UK's quarantine 'red list' today as virus cases rise

Downing Street is set to add Croatia to its 'red list' today giving thousands of Brits just 30 hours to return home to avoid quarantining, it has been claimed.

Transport Minister Grant Shapps will add the Balkan holiday hotspot to the UK's "red list" of nations after a sharp rise in coronavirus cases there.

Croatia has seen a spike in the number of cases in recent days with 219 fresh coronavirus infections registered on Wednesday alone, bringing the total number to 7,074 in the Adriatic country.

Other European nations, including Austria, have cautioned against travel to Croatia.

Slovenia, meanwhile, urged its citizens to return from the popular tourist spot by the end of this week or face a mandatory two-week quarantine.

Croatia's exclusion will reportedly be announced by the UK government this afternoon, giving holidaymakers an expected deadline of early Saturday morning, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Those who arrive after the cut off must self-isolate for 14 days once back in the UK.

Last week, British travelers rushed home from summer holidays in France after the government announced it had added the country to its quarantine list.

It gave an estimated 160,000 UK holidaymakers there just over 24 hours to get home or face self-isolation on return.

Other countries including Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Malta are already on the government's quarantine list.

Britain is also working with London's Heathrow Airport on a plan to use Covid-19 testing at arrivals to help shorten quarantine times.

It comes amid reports a local lockdown being enforced in Oldham is imminent after it recorded the country’s third-highest infection rate.

Bars, shops and restaurants could be ordered to shut 'imminently' - with council leaders claiming it would devastate struggling businesses and make no difference to the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, Matt Hancock has announced plans to roll out regular mass testing for the entire population, regardless of condition, to help restore normal life, but was unable to put a timescale on the target.
