Croatia's new remote worker visa allows Brits to come and stay for up to a year

If you're working from home and feeling a dire need for a change of scenery, then you may want to check out a new offering from Croatia.

That's because the country is inviting Brits to come and stay for up to 12 months, courtesy of a brand new visa for remote workers.

Basically, it's the perfect excuse if you've always wanted to check out its breathtaking national parks, vibrant cities and beautiful beaches. Oh, and of course there are the Croatian islands that never fail to be a hit with intrepid explorers.

The way it works is that it allows you to move to Croatia for the year, but you'll still be working for your UK employer (and you won't be allowed to work for Croatian companies).

Applications are already open for remote workers - or 'digital nomads' as they've been dubbed - and you can apply as an individual or with your family.

There are some requirements such as needing to provide proof of employment, health insurance and an annual income of at least HRK 202,890 (approximately £22,897). You'll also be expected to organise your accommodation, although you can begin your stay at a hotel before finding somewhere a little more long-term.

The country's minister of Tourism and Sports, Nikolina Brnjac, said that there are hopes to "attract as many digital nomads as possible", and revealed that there has been an increased interest in its cities as locations for those working remotely.

He added: "I believe that Croatia will impress digital nomads with its natural and cultural beauty, as well as its authentic offer. I wish all current and future digital nomads a warm welcome to one of the most desirable and unique European destinations - Croatia."

It's not the only country to offer a scheme of this nature.

During the pandemic a number of destinations launched remote worker visas including some Caribbean islands.

In fact, the Barbados Tourism Marketing authority revealed earlier this year that since the launch of its remote worker visa in June, it had received hundreds of applications from Brits.

The organisation said that applicants predominantly hailed from London, Surrey, Hertfordshire, West Midlands, Kent, Berkshire, West Yorkshire, Hampshire, Dorset, and Buckinghamshire.
