Cristiano Ronaldo will not face charges over alleged rape in Las Vegas hotel, prosecutors say

Football star Cristiano Ronaldo will not face criminal charges after a woman accused him of rape in a Las Vegas hotel, prosecutors have said.

The Clark County District Attorney announced the decision not to follow the allegation further on Monday.

Prosecutor Steve Wolfson said in a statement that, after reviewing a new police investigation, he determined that sexual assault claims cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt and no charge will be filed.

A woman had accused the footballer, who plays for Juventus and the Portuguese national side, of raping her at a Las Vegas Strip resort in 2009.

The player's lawyer Peter Christiansen has said the sex was consensual.

His accuser has a lawsuit pending against Ronaldo in Las Vegas, which alleges he or those working for him allowed terms of a confidential financial settlement with her to become public.

A statement from the Clark County District Attorney's office said: "The Clark County District Attorney's Office announced today that it will decline to prosecute a 10-year-old sexual assault allegation against Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Based upon a review of the information presented at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming."
