Cristiano Ronaldo turned his back as South Korea scored crucial goal vs Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo was called into question following South Korea's equaliser against Portugal on Friday.

Portugal had taken the lead after just five minutes courtesy of Ricardo Horta's opener as he fired past the Korea goalkeeper following Diogo Dalot's cut-back. But despite having a goal disallowed for offside, Korea soon managed to square things up at Education City Stadium.

Kim Young-gwon was the man to get on the scoresheet with his goal after 27 minutes - reacting quickly to half-volley the ball home from close range inside the box. Ronaldo will certainly not want to see the footage again in any hurry, as the ball cannoned off his back into the path of Young-gwon from the corner kick.

Two Portugal stars had jumped at the near post with an opposing Korea player to compete for the initial header, with Ronaldo stood a few yards behind them. Yet none of the three players were able to make contact as the ball fizzed over their heads to hit Ronaldo, who hadn't anticipated the ball coming his way.

In his surprise, Ronaldo had turned his head away from the ball before it hit him on the back, teeing up Young-gwon nicely to score. Speaking at half-time, BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer said: "It hits Ronaldo, doesn’t it? He actually turns his back on it and it bounces really nicely.

“He [Ronaldo] doesn’t expect that to go there, he’s expecting one of his teammates to clear that, you can see him turning back and it falls lovely into his {Young-gwon's] path. He sticks it away really well.”

As it was, that proved to be the spark Korea needed to spearhead their charge for a place in the knockout stages. Portugal's path to the next round was already guaranteed ahead of the game, but they will still be disappointed to have lost the fixture as Hwang Hee-chan's 90th-minute strike sent South Korea through to the next round with them.

It was a superb breakaway goal for Korea, as Tottenham star Son Heung-min sprinted downfield with the ball after a Portugal corner had been cleared, before sliding a pass into Wolves star Hee-chan's path to finish off. That goal put Korea on four points for the group stages - level with Uruguay but with a better goal difference.

Uruguay were beating Ghana 2-0 at the time to hold up their end of the bargain through two Giorgian de Arrascaeta goals, but that result was not going to be enough for a place in the last-16, leaving the likes of Luis Suarez despairing on the subs' bench as he learned of Korea's goal.

Uruguay pressed hard for another goal which would have seen them through but they couldn't find it as Suarez burst into tears. The referee was then chased down the tunnel by angry Uruguay players at the final whistle as they were dumped out of the tournament.

Portugal and South Korea will now face the winners and runners-up of Group G respectively in the last-16. In Korea's case that is likely to mean a fierce test against tournament favourites Brazil, while Portugal will meet either Switzerland, Serbia or Cameroon.
