Cristiano Ronaldo's yellow card against Ireland is great news for Manchester United fans

Cristiano Ronaldo was the star of the show as he broke Irish hearts in Faro on Wednesday night.

The 36-year-old became international football’s record goalscorer with a last-gasp double in the World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.

But Ronaldo picked up a yellow card for taking his jersey off as he celebrated Portugal's winner at the Estádio Algarve, which means he will be suspened for his country's clash with Azerbaijan next week.

With Portugal facing Qatar in a friendly prior to the Azerbaijan game, Ronaldo is now expected to report earlier than planned for Manchester United duty.

He is expected to be released from Portugal's squad ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Qatar and fly to Manchester in the coming days.

Ronaldo missed an early penalty after Gavin Bazunu clawed his effort to safety but the new United signing said: “It’s part of the game, part of the business.

“Sometimes you score and sometimes you miss. But I still believed until the end of the game and I’m so glad to score and to win the game.”

And Ronaldo continued: ““I'm very happy, not only because I beat the record, but for the special moments that we had.

“Two goals at the end of the game is so tough, but I have to appreciate what the team did until the end. I’m very glad for the supporters.”

But some people believed Ronaldo was lucky to still be on the pitch after he appeared to strike Dara O'Shea as he waited to take a penalty in the first half.

Liam Brady said on RTE Two's coverage of the game: "He definitely strikes O'Shea.

"If the referee sees it or if VAR tells him to have a look at it, he could very easily have been sent off. But he is Ronaldo and I suppose there's an element of 'is he too big to send off?'"
