Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction after Lionel Messi named UEFA Forward of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo's face told a thousand words as his arch rival Lionel Messi won UEFA's Forward of the Year prize at the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday night.

The award is presented to the most outstanding attacking performers of the previous European club football season, with ex-winners including the likes of Raul, Ronaldinho and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Ronaldo has won the award three times, but after a stellar campaign which saw Messi score a staggering 51 goals in 50 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions he picked up the prize for the second time in his career.

Messi and Ronaldo were sat next to each other during the ceremony and the Juventus player did not appear to look too happy when Messi returned with the award, staring into the distance with a somewhat unimpressed look on his face.

The two did, however, exchange some words, and looked to be on fairly good terms despite an epic sporting rivalry which has seen them go head-to-head for both club and individual honours ever since Ronaldo's move to Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo even suggested the two could share a meal together soon, saying: "Of course we have a good relationship, we have not had dinner together yet but I hope in the future."

In the other individual awards Liverpool duo Alisson and Virgil van Dijk were triumphant, winning the Best Goalkeeper and Best Defender awards respectively, while van Dijk also won the main overall prize of European Player of the Year .

Messi's teammate Frenkie de Jong won Best Midfielder thanks to his impressive performances in the Champions League for Ajax last season.

Van Dijk appeared to be proud of receiving his award, and was quick to show his gratitude towards his Liverpool colleagues.

“I need to thank my teammates, without them I would not have achieved what I have achieved," he said.

"It’s been a long road and it’s part of my journey. I’m very proud to get this trophy. It’s credit to everyone who has helped me.”
