Although Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t look to be heading anywhere anytime soon, rumours are always going to follow the Manchester United star over his future.
Speculation has surrounded the Portuguese superstar ever since he made his return to Old Trafford last summer, with suggestions that he might not be happy at United.
Despite those reports, Ronaldo has nevertheless been one of United’s top performers this season, with his goals crucial in keeping them in the race for the top four, as well as qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
His agent Jorge Mendes looks to have brushed off any rumours of an exit for now by insisting his client is “very happy” at United, and playing down suggestions he could be looking a move elsewhere.
That hasn’t stopped Ronaldo’s mother though from meeting with other clubs’ officials and discussing potential transfers – albeit with her tongue firmly in her cheek.
Dolores Aveiro was spotted with the vice-president of Brazilian club Flamengo, leading to some supporters getting excited over the prospect of Ronaldo making the move to South America.
Marcos Braz though had travelled to Ronaldo’s home of Madeira in order to hold discussions with former Swansea manager Paulo Sousa, who is set to take over at Flamengo for the 2022 season after departing as Poland manager.
While visiting the island, Braz bumped into Ronaldo’s mother at a restaurant in the village of Porto Moniz, and had his picture taken with her before joking on Twitter that he would need the blessing of Aveiro to sign the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, saying: "Conviction always starts with the family. World number 1 mother, CR7."
Aveiro also shared the image on her Instagram, and teased a potential move for her son by writing: "The world is small; I have a few days to analyse your proposal if I go or not.... Welcome to Madeira.”
Some Flamengo fans replied to the post as they talked up the prospect of Ronaldo joining their club, although many of them will be aware it’s unlikely the Portuguese will be heading to South America before he retires from playing.
For now, United fans can rest easy that their star will be staying at Old Trafford.
