Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United future could be impacted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decision

Premier League football may be on hold during the international break but the talk around Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United future has only intensified.

Since United's 2-0 defeat in the Manchester derby fans haven't stopped talking about their concerns for the club. Solskjaer's side have won just three of their last 10 matches and the title challenge we were dreaming about in August is already in tatters.

Is the manager to blame for all of it? Of course not, players have to take responsibility as well and we'd do well to remember that it's the board's responsibility to replace Solskjaer - he's not going to sack himself from the biggest job in football.

The MEN Sport understand Solskjaer is on borrowed time as United manager, but the club are yet to identify an obvious replacement.

United's indecision over Solskjaer is almost comical. Look at what Aston Villa and Norwich have done. The moment they noticed things were going wrong they reacted to it.

Villa also showed United that a manager can be prised away from a club mid-season. I know United's situation is slightly more complex given they'll be looking for an elite-level coach, but the indecision being shown is poor to say the very least.

The club's owners promised to be more communicative with supporters after the European Super League debacle, yet once again we find ourselves in the dark over what is going on behind the scenes.

Not only are the fans struggling to comprehend what's going on at the club right now, it must be just as agonising for the players.

The likes of Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial seem to have no idea what their role is at the club. Both have fallen out of favour with Solskjaer and there's a genuine sense that the atmosphere at the club could begin to turn even more toxic if some form of clarity isn't provided.

However, look where United are in the table. They're currently sixth, five points off fourth and nine points off the top. If this rut continues then United will slip further down the league, and with the likes of West Ham and Brighton continuing to impress along with Tottenham potentially enjoying the good old 'new manager bounce', who knows how far United could fall.

If United finish outside the top four, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford will be impacted.

The 36-year-old was re-signed in the summer and has made an instant impact, scoring nine goals in 12 matches. He's become the talisman of the team and it's hard to imagine where United would be without him.

But Ronaldo came back to the club to win trophies. He hasn't come here to battle for a place in the Europa League but that looks like a genuine possibility.

Can you really envisage Mr Champions League playing in the Europa League or even the Europa Conference League? The way things are going, we'd be lucky to even qualify for that!

The board's indecision over Solskjaer could be having a huge impact on the dressing room and it could also have a huge say on what direction the club moves in next season.
