When the clock struck midnight on Hogmanay it was another year people were glad to see the back of.
With restrictions yet again in place in Scotland and many festivities cancelled, celebrations were scaled down.
Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo also acknowledged that it had been another tough 12 months with the world continuing to fight Covid.
But the Portuguese icon’s New Year message on his Instagram account has caused amusement as he appeared to lack any awareness.
Ronaldo’s opening line in his message to his followers read: “2021 is coming to an end and it was far from being an easy year, despite my 47 goals scored across all competitions.”
It was certainly a year of highs and lows in his career as he moved from Juventus to Old Trafford but the man who signed him, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was sacked.
But his message had social media in hysterics as he focused on his goal haul rather than his family or other challenges in the world in 2021.
@Conor_SFC said: “Unfortunately his 47 goals across all competitions couldn’t hold back the waves of Covid.”
@legendgentry007 wrote: “Must have given his social media manager the night off.”
@saucerboonie said: “Covid would have disappeared if he’d scored 50…”
@Adam_Jones94 said: “I had to double check that was actually real. Insane.”
