Cristiano Ronaldo's discarded captain's armband to be auctioned off to help sick child

The captain's armband that Cristiano Ronaldo threw down in anger is up for auction to raise money for a sick child in Serbia.

The Portuguese star was denied a late winner in a World Cup qualifier in Belgrade on Saturday and could not hide his frustration.

Young Gavril Djurdjevic, who is just six months old and from the city of Kragujevac, suffers from spinal muscular atrophy.

Humanitarian organisation Together for Life is looking to raise €2.5m - roughly £2.1m - needed for his treatment.

They are now planning to sell Ronaldo’s Portugal armband to the highest bidder in an online auction over the next three days to help reach that lofty target.

It was taken from the pitch by a worker, who donated it to Together for Life and baby Gavril.

Ronaldo's fury could yet have a positive outcome despite him being denied another international goal.

Serbia had fought back from 2-0 down to tie the contest, but were fortunate to escape with a point.

Replays show that Ronaldo's effort clearly crossed the line and he even reeled away in celebration.

Serbia's Stefan Mitrovic tried to clear the ball off the line and clearly the officials felt he succeeded.

They have since apologised for their error, although that will come as little solace to Ronaldo.

"As per FIFA's policies, all I can say is that I apologised to the national coach, Fernando Santos, and to the Portuguese team for what happened," the Dutch referee Danny Makkelie told Portuguese outlet A Bola .

"As a referee team, we always work hard to make good decisions.

"When we are in the news in this manner, it doesn't make us happy at all."
