Cristiano Ronaldo's defiant Champions League message as Juventus bid to end hoodoo

Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a defiant message ahead of Juventus' Champions League last-16 tie against Porto, as the Italian club bid to end their hoodoo in the competition.

Not since 1996 have Juve lifted the most-coveted trophy in European football, and have fallen short at the final hurdle on five occasions since.

Even with Ronaldo in their ranks, they have not managed to get past the quarter-finals in the last two campaigns.

Last season Juventus were eliminated by Lyon in a shock upset in the last-16, but they head into the clash with Porto favourites to progress.

“This is what the Champions League is all about: the knockout rounds," Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

"It's almost as if another competition starts from this point on and everybody has to bring their A game, because every detail can make the difference.

“In the last couple of years we went home sooner than we wanted, but we continue to aim higher every season and this year is no exception."

Juventus won five of their six group matches to finish top ahead of Barcelona, who were the only side to defeat them in the opening round.

In doing so they managed to avoid a trickier tie against last season's finalists PSG, though in their path stands a Porto side who lost only once in the group phase too.

And Ronaldo is all too aware it will not be a straightforward task to see off the Portuguese giants, as he goes in search of a record-equalling sixth Champions League crown.

“Tomorrow we have a very important game against a very strong team and I can only hope that it may be the beginning of the long walk we want to take until the final," he said.

“Respect for the opponent, ambition for the victory and 100% focus on our goals. Let's go guys. Fino Alla Fine!"
