Cristiano Ronaldo's comments on Kylian Mbappe amid rift claims after penalty miss

It was a tough night for Kylian Mbappe.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward missed the decisive penalty kick that knocked France out of the Euros and saw Switzerland progress to the quarter-finals.

Mbappe has aspirations to be the best player in the world.

And despite the setback, Gary Neville is confident this will be a minor blip on the road to superstardom.

"You just knew as Mbappe was walking up, you just thought, 'Oh no'", Neville said on ITV Sport. "He had a couple of chances in extra time and you just felt, 'It isn't going well for him.'

"He has aspirations to be the greatest player in the world, like Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi. This is a bump in the road, it'll be a tough few weeks for him but he'll come through it.

"He's had a tough time in this tournament it's been a tough one for them as a team."

Another man who is confident Mbappe can reach the top is his hero Ronaldo.

Speaking ahead of the Euros, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner named the Frenchman alongside Erling Haaland as a player with the potential to take the crown he shares with Messi.

"It is hard to choose just one player to say this one will be the best, but I think it is exciting to see this new generation of young players, like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, who are coming through.

"Some players can have one or two great seasons, the really great players are the ones that keep doing it season after season, and that is not so easy to do. It takes a lot of hard work, and a lot of commitment."

Mbappe missed France's fifth and final spot-kick on Monday night and was devastated when his penalty was saved.

But many have pointed out that Mbappe was consoled by his France teammates, with even Patrick Vieira admitting his nation played liked individuals rather than a team against Switzerland.

There was talk of a growing rift between Mbappe and Olivier Giroud going into the Euros after comments meant by the Chelsea striker following a 3-0 friendly win over Bulgaria.

"I was quiet because sometimes you make a run and the balls just don't arrive," Giroud said on L'Equipe TV. "I don't always pretend to make the right calls, but I have tried hard to give solutions in the area."

Mbappe admitted he was "a little affected" by Giroud's comments, responding: "What he said does not bother me more than that. He expresses a feeling when he speaks.

"I'm a forward and I've had that feeling 365 times in a game when you feel like you're not being served.

"It's more about releasing it publicly. I saw him in the dressing room, I congratulated him on his goals, he didn't say anything to me. I heard about it in the press. That's more [important] than what he said – he didn't say anything bad."

Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe added he didn't want to make "a big deal about it", saying: "We are here to represent France, that is the most important thing."
