Cristiano Ronaldo responds to breaking latest record with 700th career goal

Cristiano Ronaldo said that "records are looking for me" after notching his 700th career goal on Monday night.

The Portuguese superstar scored a penalty in his nation's 2-1 defeat to Ukraine in Kiev, with the hosts' victory over the reigning European champions securing their spot at Euro 2020 next summer.

Goals from Roman Yaremchuk and West Ham's Andriy Yarmolenko in the first half hour gave the hosts a two-goal lead, before Ronaldo pulled one back from the penalty spot.

The defeat leaves Portugal needing two wins from their remaining two games at home to Lithuania and away to Luxembourg to secure qualification.

Ronaldo's goal was his 95th in 162 games for Portugal, joining his 605 club career strikes - five for Sporting Lisbon, 118 for Manchester United , 450 for Real Madrid and 32 for current club Juventus .

"Not just anyone can reach this figure," Ronaldo told reporters after the match in the Ukrainian capital.

"Thank you to my team-mates, colleagues and coaches who have helped me to become the player I am.

"I am disappointed that we didn't win, but proud of the team."

The forward went on to insist that records are just part and parcel of his remarkable career, adding that he doesn't keep track of just how many he holds.

"How many records do I have? I don't know," he continued.

"I have to enjoy the moment and thank those who helped me reach this impressive mark.

"The last time I played at this ground I won the Champions League (against Liverpool in 2018), a beautiful moment that is in the past. Today we played well but couldn't win.

"Records come naturally - I don't go looking for them; records are looking for me! Without having an obsession, they happen naturally."
