Cristiano Ronaldo releases statement to Liverpool fans after Anfield gesture against Manchester United

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a message of thanks to Liverpool fans.

The Reds faced Man United in the Premier League on Tuesday night, where Liverpool won 4-0 at Anfield. Ronaldo was absent from the match after he was given time off to spend with his family after the tragic death of his newborn son.

In the seventh minute of the contest at Anfield, both Liverpool and Man United fans held a minute’s applause and loudly sung 'You'll Never Walk Alone' to demonstrate a clear show of support for Ronaldo and family. The tribute was labelled as a “touch of class” by Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville.

Ronaldo’s sister and mother have since sent messages of thanks to Liverpool fans for their mark of respect. Now the Portuguese international has himself shown his gratitude to Anfield.

“One world… One sport… One global family,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a short video of the minute’s applause at Anfield.

“Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion.”
