Cristiano Ronaldo punching wall, Bruno Fernandes' leaked WhatsApp rant and advice ignored

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's biggest test this season is his ability to handle big personalities.

The Manchester United dressing room is teeming with egos and Solskjaer knows he must remain cool, calm and most importantly, in control, if this season is to be a success.

Gary Neville suggested Solskjaer is struggling in this department following this weekend's defeat by Leicester City.

"The aura of [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Bruno] Fernandes is walking around with his arms out all the time," said Neville on Sky Sports.

"[Paul] Pogba doesn't know if he is staying or leaving, the emerging captain [Harry] Maguire thinking how he controls this lot. Ole has to solve it this week."

Interestingly, Neville has previously spoken out about this after Ronaldo stormed off the pitch in anger following the Everton draw.

The former Red Devils captain said at the time: "He walked off the pitch muttering to himself, which throws the questions up in the air - What's he saying? Who is he annoyed with?

"It can only come back to the manager. Actions like that - and Cristiano is smart enough to know this - will bring real pressure on the manager, more pressure than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already under."

As it has been pointed out countless times, Solskjaer is under immense pressure this season.

But whether you can look upon this sympathetically remains to be seen.

Solskjaer was effectively handed the chequebook this summer and was like a child in a sweetshop purchasing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Manchester United are in dire need of a new midfielder and probably would have signed one if it weren't for the fact that Ronaldo looked as if he was going to Man City.

Fearing a repeat of the Carlos Tevez saga, Solskjaer and co. re-signed the five-time Ballon d'Or winner simply because they could, not because they needed to strengthen in his position.

By the end of the summer, Solskjaer was left with an unbalanced team comprised of six first-team strikers all vying for game time and a midfield lacking direction.

So far this campaign, Solskjaer has trialled seven different midfield partnerships and, judging by recent results, still hasn't found the perfect formula for success.

Additionally, Solskjaer was also left with a dressing room packed with big egos.

The three biggest egos in the room are of course Ronaldo, Fernandes and Pogba.

Fernandes has showcased his strong personality on a number of occasions at Man United, including when he gestured for Man City manager Pep Guardiola to be quiet with a finger to the lips during a derby.

Perhaps his most memorable moment of fury came when he was at Sporting Lisbon when a leaked WhatsApp message obtained by Portuguese publication Record featured him slamming his teammates for "chasing money".

The voice message allegedly read: "Bro, I don't say anything! Honestly, if you want me to tell you, I'd rather not comment on anything.

"I think very badly of some of the attitudes of some players. Actually not a certain attitude, it's an attitude that does not exist. There are players who have no attitude here, bro. They don't want to be here, they don't want to play.

"They don't want to be here then f*** off, let them say they don't want to play. They spend a year here getting money, and then they f*** off, bro. S*** attitude bro, for f**** sake."

Pogba has also famously upset the apple cart on a number of occasions.

His agent Mino Raiola, for example, announcing to the world his client is unhappy at Old Trafford and wants to leave in the very next transfer window on the eve of United's Champions League clash with RB Leipzig last season.

United went on to lose the must-win match, which saw them knocked out of the competition. And of course, Pogba ended up remaining at Old Trafford.

Adding more personalities to this already volatile dressing room was always going to be potentially disastrous.

And everyone associated with football knows Ronaldo has a big ego.

Just last season it was reported that a furious Ronaldo stormed off the pitch for Juventus and punched the dressing room wall.

Juventus had actually won the match 3-1 but Ronaldo was said to have been angry at not getting on the scoresheet.

He showered in silence before exiting the stadium without saying a word to anyone.

As aforementioned, it is hard to be sympathetic to Solskjaer when he effectively fuelled his own fire.

At the start of his tenure, the Norwegian made a big point of de-weeding Jose Mourinho's garden of superstars as he offloaded the big personalities of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

But in recent transfer windows, Solskjaer has largely followed Mourinho's criticised formula for success and now finds himself in the same position as the Portuguese back in 2018.

If he gets it right, he'll prove he's a strong character for ruling over a tough crowd, and if he gets it wrong he'll be out of a job.

But whatever happens, Solskjaer won't be able to say he didn't know what he was getting himself into when bringing Ronaldo into the mix.
