Cristiano Ronaldo proves Manchester United loyalties with Mason Greenwood decision

Cristiano Ronaldo has underlined his Manchester United loyalty with his voting for the Kopa Trophy.

Having completed a sensational return to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, Ronaldo has scored 12 goals across the Premier League and Champions League - but he was overlooked when it came to the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony.

A five-time winner of the accolade, the 36-year-old was placed sixth this year as Lionel Messi went on to pick up a seventh award.

That decision sparked a row centred on Ronaldo, his long-term Argentine rival and Robert Lewandowski - who had been tipped to reign supreme.

When it came to the supplementary Kopa Trophy, things played out a little calmer.

Only established three years ago, the coveted award - handed out to the best-performing U21 player on the planet - has previously been won by only Kylian Mbappe and Matthijs de Ligt.

Barcelona sensation Pedri was the winner this time around and can now add his name to that list.

However, such is the young talent available to England coach Gareth Southgate, there was a notable homegrown representation, too, when it came to the 2021 nominees, including United forward Mason Greenwood.

Having teamed up with the academy graduate this summer, Ronaldo showed his allegiance by picking Greenwood as his number one choice for the award.

Ronaldo's compatriot Nuno Mendes (PSG) and Borussia Dortmund starlet Giovanni Reyna were his other two picks.

Pedri won 89 points to take first-place ahead of Jude Bellingham (Dortmund) and Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) as Greenwood did enough to edge out Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka into fifth-place.
