Manchester United risk an unhappy Cristiano Ronaldo seeking an Old Trafford exit if they appoint Ralf Rangnick as manager on a permanent basis.
The interim boss is expected to leave his post at the end of the season to move into a consultancy role, but Rangnick has not ruled out staying on if Red Devils chiefs see fit.
But that decision could have major consequences.
According to the Daily Star, Ronaldo is 'ready to quit ' United if he disagrees with who the club appoint to be their next boss, having only returned five months ago.
The 36-year-old, who has a contract until 2023, is understood to be among a host of Old Trafford stars currently unhappy with the German coach's methods.
And the Portugal captain is not alone in his disapproval, with a total of 11 first-team players wanting out, as first revealed by Mirror Football.

Rangnick has already agreed a two-year deal to become a 'Senior Football Advisor' upon leaving the dugout in May, meaning he will - for better or worse - be sticking around upstairs.
But Ronaldo's opinion could weigh heavily, with the Portuguese a strong influence in the dressing room.
Losing the the five-time Ballon d'Or winner would certainly see the Red Devils light for goals, having scored 14 in his 21 appearances since sensationally re-signing in August.
Ronaldo walking out on United for the second time would go against his New Year's message, telling fans via social media: "I’m not happy with what we are achieving in Man United.
"None of us are happy, I’m sure of that. We know that we have to work harder, play better and deliver way more than we are delivering right now.
"Let’s make this New Year’s Eve a turning point of the season! Let’s embrace 2022 with a higher spirit and a stronger mentality.
"Let’s take us above and beyond, let’s reach for the stars and put this club right where it belongs! Join us, we’re counting on all of you!"

The news of his ultimatum comes off the back of Richard Arnold's appointment as as Chief Executive Officer from February 1, replacing the outgoing Ed Woodward.
Arnold, a former marketing director at the club, is beginning his tenure at a tumultuous time but can count on the backing of co-owner Joel Glazer.
"I would like to thank Ed for his tireless work on behalf of Manchester United during his nine years as Executive Vice-Chairman and 16 years with the club," Glazer said in a statement.
