Cristiano Ronaldo 'makes Man Utd managerial recommendation' to club chiefs

Cristiano Ronaldo has allegedly recommended Zinedine Zidane for the role of Manchester United manager as pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to grow.

The Red Devils have slipped to sixth in the Premier League following defeat by Leicester City on the weekend and Solskjaer is in danger of being sacked unless things improve.

A major issue for Solskjaer is keeping the strong personalities at the club in check.

Solskjaer already had the likes of Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire in the dressing room before he re-opened the Old Trafford door for Ronaldo.

And reports from Spain suggest the transfer may be the Norwegian's undoing.

According to El Chiringuito, Ronaldo has recommended the board look at his former boss at Real Madrid, Zidane, as a possible replacement for Solskjaer, should they decide to wield the axe.

Ronaldo won three Champions League trophies under Zidane at the Bernabeu and the Frenchman is currently out of work.

For now, reports suggest Solskjaer still has the backing of the Man United board, who would only consider pulling the trigger if a top-four finish looked unattainable.

Solskjaer knows he is under increasing pressure to get things right this season after the board backed him in the transfer window.

And he called for unity from his squad following the Foxes defeat.

"We started well," Solskjaer said. "Mason [Greenwood] scored a fantastic goal. You look at the spaces we create and with a bit more care we'd have got the second one.

"We more or less gifted them the equaliser. The second one was a set play which is disappointing.

"We get an equaliser and then concede again 10 seconds later. Concentration was a key factor in this game.

"The whole performance was not good enough with and without the ball. Over the international break, we have had a good look to see what has gone wrong lately.

"We have had too many games where we have lost points so we need to look at the whole set-up and balance of the team and maybe something has to give.

"Every point in the Premier League you have to fight for. You have to tackle, block and win headers and in key moments today, we didn't do that enough.

"Every game is a test of character here. Especially now it is an examination of character, staff, players and everyone around here. We have to stick together for Wednesday night."
